together, a healthy timor-leste
HAMNASA stands for Hamutuk Nasaun Saudavel, or Together a Healthy Country. And, it also means “SMILE” because we’re pretty excited about how we’re working within our own community to build a healthy future for Timor-Leste.
HAMNASA’s founders envisioned a local organization run by Timorese with high capacity and integrity to bring together the priorities of Timor-Leste’s local communities and public health sector. HAMNASA leadership and staff have decades of combined experience supporting clinical and community-based health training, quality improvement, and innovative intervention. Our vision of a health and happy Timorese people is underscored by our commitment to equity, shared vision, and collaboration.

HOW WE WORK
HAMNASA brings together the health care priorities of Timorese families with the health-for-all mission of Timor-Leste’s national health system.
HAMNASA works side-by-side with Timorese communities and the Timor-Leste health system to improve the accessibility, quality, and responsiveness of high-priority health services. Our work centers on building shared understanding of the health challenges facing Timorese families and, together, realizing the solutions that will ensure a healthy future.
HAMNASA’s local staff have worked alongside health providers and communities in all 13 of Timor-Leste’s municipalities. Our expertise and experience includes: extending critical health information; adapting existing programs to better meet community needs; and, designing (and scaling up) innovative ways to link Timorese people to the country’s universal health care system.

HOW HAI BECAME HAMNASA
HAMNASA developed under the guidance and mentorship of Health Alliance International (HAI), a USA-based international NGO that shares our values working in solidarity with local communities and national health systems. Over a five-year period, HAI helped HAMNASA build our organizational capacity; and, in autumn 2021—with the support of the US, Timor-Leste, and Australian governments—HAI formally transitioned all active Timor-Leste-based activities and staff to HAMNASA.
Learn more about HAI’s legacy in Timor-Leste and their values-driven decision to transition to local ownership.
